In
today's competitive environment, businesses are seeking ways to
improve efficiencies in this new challenging economy.
This is where information technology has helped business compete
more aggressively and in some cases has been the competitive advantage
to succeed where others have failed.
With the investment that has been put into these I.T. systems, organizations
expect their systems to be running efficiently and more importantly
operating securely as well.
However, many of these systems are deployed right out of the box
with many system configurations set to default levels for easy and
optimum usability for the end-user. These settings often do not
take security considerations into account and gives businesses a
false sense of security that their systems are relatively secured.
A system with default configurations can be one of the many ways
a hacker from the Internet or internal network could gain unauthorized
access. These settings are well known and are readily available
on hacker websites.
Even if organizations are aware of the security implications of
deploying certain operating systems, they may not have the necessary
resources or skill-sets to make these changes, and the fear of possibly
breaking the business applications, causing unnecessary downtime
is too much of an inconvenience to the I.T. department.
